CRICKET: Burnham-on-Sea beaten by Wellington in Shrubbery Hotel Somerset League

BURNHAM-ON-SEA remain without a win after four games of this season’s Somerset League Premier Division after slipping to a heavy defeat against Wellington on Saturday.

The visitors batted first and their opening pair set the tone, adding 80 for the first wicket before Ollie Farnham had Tom Chambers (44) caught by Jim Bloodworth.

Neil Hendy (54) and Arron Campbell (74) each struck half-centuries as they punished an off-colour Burnham attack, with Brett Diver (2-64) among the wickets but proving expensive.

Farnham (2-38 from nine) was the pick of the attack and returned to dismiss Campbell, but some late hitting by Mark Bray (29*) pushed Wellington up to 248-7 from their 45 overs.

Burnham soon slipped to 7-3 in reply as Peter Harris (1), Bloodworth (1) and captain Rob Driver (0) each fell cheaply.

Brad House and Lee Coles took different approaches to the rebuilding job, Coles making 29 from 22 balls with two sixes before he was clean bowled to leave the score 44-4.

House was showing patience at the other end and finished unbeaten with 39 from 62 balls while wickets fell regularly around him, with three Burnham batsmen dismissed for golden ducks.

Campbell completed a good all-round display for the leaders with 3-14 as Burnham’s tail fell away.

On Saturday, Burnham go to Taunton St Andrew’s 2nds.

Somerset League Division 3
Lympsham & Belvedere 117-3 beat Broadway & Horton 115 
by 7 wkts

LYMPSHAM & Belvedere 1st XI defeated Broadway & Horton by seven wickets in an excellent team performance in Division 3 of the Shrubbery Hotel Somerset League on Saturday. 

The home side won an important toss and asked B&H to bat on a damp wicket. 

Opening bowlers Sam McCrea and Andy Taylor bowled excellent nine over spells to reduce the visitors to 27-5, McCrea ending with the remarkable figures of 9-6-5-3 and Taylor 1-23. 

A defiant 65-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Pike (20) and Murray (50) held L&B CC up before Sam Jennings (2-23) and three run outs saw B&H dismissed for 115 in the 35th over. 

In response L&B CC had to negotiate a tricky half-hour before tea and openers Dave Luff and Mike Hosey encountered few problems before Hosey was dismissed for 16, and Brian Hosey was dismissed without scoring to leave the home side on 29-2 at tea. 

B&H bowled an excellent line and length throughout offering few scoring opportunities as Dave Luff and Tom Gooding dug in until Luff (26) was trapped in front with the score on 66-3 off 21. 

Gooding continued his sound defence and, assisted by Neil Chadwick, gradually reduced the target until victory was reached in the 36th over.

Gooding finishing unbeaten on 37 and Chadwick 28.

The Lympsham Concrete man of the match was shared between Sam Mccrea and Tom Gooding.

On Saturday, Lympsham & Belvedere travel to Ilminster 2nds.

Somerset League Division 4
Huntspill & District 196-6 beat 
North Perrott 2nds 195-6 by 3 wkts

HUNTSPILL & District travelled to previously unbeaten North Perrott 2nds, missing some key members and only having a team of 10, but still came away with victory. 

On a damp pitch Huntspill won the toss and put their hosts in to bat.
Jake Randall (1-38) got an early breakthrough, reducing Perrott to 3-1. 

Opening bowlers Randall and Matt Osmant (1-32) kept it tight, but batsmen Craig Jones (44) and John Ireland (19) were looking solid.

It took a change of bowler to break their stance, and it was young James Garner (2-28) who got it, leaving the home side 78-2.

Jones was dismissed when the star of the day, Ryan Edwards, took a sublime one-handed catch off Garner.

Wickets flowed frequently after this dismissal, leaving Perrott on 195-6 from their 45.

The in-form Nick Slack and Graham Dyer opened the batting and began the chase, but Dyer was bowled for just one from the ball of the day, losing his leg stump. 

Tom Garner joined Slack, who was scoring quickly, dispatching the bowlers to every part of the boundary before edging behind on 29.

Garner and Edwards built a solid third-wicket partnership, with Edwards finding the boundary on a frequent basis and soon passing his 50. 

He played some fantastic shots, including two 6s, but soon after fell for 64.

Huntspill lost three quick wickets in Osmant (6), Garner (47) and Cavill (0), leaving Randall and Paul Garner at the crease with pressure building. 

Luckily for the visitors, Randall was seeing the ball well even though the light wasn’t the best. 

Paul Garner (10*) played a great innings supporting Randall (23*), who hit the winning runs just as the heavens opened.

This was a fantastic win for Huntspill, who had around 16 players missing across 1st and 2nd XIs, due weddings, holidays, work and trips to Wembley.
