HIGHLIGHTS of the week at Enmore Park were Hannah Grant (county champion) equalling her course record 69 on Saturday, Taylor Stote making the cut at the Brabazon Trophy at Frilford Heath with a four-under second round and Enmore Juniors winning the home leg of the Somerset League.

The Terry Green Mixed Greensomes Open was played on Sunday in glorious weather.

With a full field from far and wide, locals Merv and Lyn Slocombe had an outstanding 39 points in third place, missing out on second spot on countback to defending champions Dan Andison & Michelle Orriss, also on 39 points.

The winners picture with the Trophy were Dave and June Boulton from Saltford Golf Club with an impressive 42 points.

Martin Collard won the Mayors Cup with a Gross 74 resulting in a net 63, a great round of golf.

Jonathan Richardson was second on nett 64, with Christopher Butcher third and Stuart Woodley fourth.

Les Nurton won the Bouverie Cup with a gross 86, which resulted in a nett 67 and placed him ahead of Peter Stowell and Malcolm McNairn, both of whom finished with nett 70 – Stowell took second on countback.

The Fred Turner Trophy was won by vice-captain Paul Martin, Derek Bremner and the in-form Martin Collard.

Enmore were knocked out the Somerset Seniors Bowl by Weston-Super-Mare in a match played at Isle of Wedmore.

While Chris Marsh and Rob Fear won their match, Bob Kippen with Steve James, Martyn Clapp with Dave Winn and Wayne Hawley with Phil Hodge lost theirs, leaving Mike Rossiter and Martyn Westbury halving their game.

However, Enmore’s fortunes picked up on Thursday in the Avalon Seniors league when they beat league leaders Stockwood Vale 3-2.

The victory arrived thanks to a decisive win on the 18th by Phil Taylor with Phil Hodge after Chris Marsh with Bob Kippen and Mike Sullivan with Keith Calvert had already ensured comfortable victories.

Peter Chessley with Andy Pearce and Brian Clutterbuck with Mel Gibbons earned the visitor’s points.

On the same day, the Somerset Seniors Scratch Cup team traveled to Mendip and beat the holders, Bath Golf Club 4-1 with wins for Mike Rossiter, Paddy Maclennan, Matt Lazenby and Neil Whisler - only Keith Miller tasted defeat.

Elsewhere, Enmore’s seniors travelled to the coastal course of Lyme Regis where the beautiful weather was not matched by the Enmore team’s golf, but nevertheless a 4-3 defeat was a reasonable effort.

Enmore’s points were gained by Keith Calvert with David Pascoe (4 & 2), Peter Scott with Mike Perry (3 & 2) and Chris Willsteed with Iain Stewart (2 up).

Next up, Enmore entertained the seniors from Mendip and the final score of 4-4 reflected the even contest.

Enmore’s points were won by Steve Lukins with Tony Pomeroy (5 & 3), captain Graham Pain with David Brown (2 & 1), Doug Read with Keith Calvert (2 up), while Phil Wood with John Newell and Ian Morrison with Dave Comley both gained half points.

Onward to Weston-super-Mare where the cloudy weather turned to heavy downpours, but Enmore’s captain, Graham Pain, described the greens as the best he has played on anywhere in the south west.

This seemed to help Enmore as they came away winners by 4.5 to 3.5.

Enmore’s scorers, all winning by 2 & 1, were Carl Netto with Norman Webb, John Newell with David Pascoe and Peter Scott with Mike Sullivan, David Brown with Doug Read whilst Ray Lukeski with Chris Willsteed gained a half.

The next two games produced a mid-season slump, firstly away at Honiton where only one group, David Keates with Steve Lukins won, by 1 up, and John Earp with Keith Calvert gained a half.

The same score line came from a home match against the Bristol and Clifton club, the only winners being Ian Edwards with Paul Waplington (1 up) with Steve Lukins and Jim McGukin gaining a half.

The Juniors won the Somerset League team event that they hosted, with all four members giving a good account of themselves, especially Oli Thomas who was third and captain William O’Hallaran, who came fifth.

Enmore Park Juniors enjoyed further success this Sunday when they travelled to next round of Somerset League matches that took place at Wells Golf Club.

They won the team event for the second time in as many weeks, enabling the club to climb up the league table.

In addition to this Oli Thomas came second and Harry Beynon was fourth in the individual event.

The next round of Somerset League matches take place at Oake Manor Golf Club.

And if that wasn’t enough, junior member Theo Culverhouse was the winner of the Lynne White stableford competition with 39 points.

LADIES captain-elect Lyn Bird was the winner of the June Medal at Brean after a stunning round of nett 65.

Her winning margin was only two though, as Beverly Cranley was hot on her heels with her nett 67.

Both ladies saw their handicaps reduced thanks to their low scoring exploits. Liz Blackwell ended up in third after her nett 71.

Bird continued her great form as she combined with Suzanne Hatfield for an excellent score of 46 Stableford points in the PING Ladies Fourball Betterball qualifying round.

The duo headed home runners-up Linda Edmondson and Lesley Millard, with Sue Wright and Millie Jones taking third place. Bird and Hatfield must now wait to see if they qualify for the next stage of the national event.

Bill Marlow enjoyed another Seniors victory as he collected the Vic Rowe Trophy for the leading score in their June Stableford.

He survived a back nine countback with seniors secretary Tony Roper to secure top spot in Division One after the pair had both scored 39 points.

Seniors captain Chris Stephens was third on 34.

Thirty-six points was the winning score in the second flight with George Stratford being the proud owner of that scorecard.

Like Marlow, a countback was required to separate him from runner-up Bill Griffin who matched the score, and the duo were one point clear of Ken Ponter who took third spot with 35.

It was a Super Series double header at the weekend with events on both days.

Saturday’s round was dominated by a superb performance from Martyn Brown.

He played very steadily with birdies galore to beat the course by nine and win by a very healthy six holes from Barry Brindley.

For Brindley it was his third runner-up position of the 2018 Series so far but the seemingly regular bridesmaid now finds himself sitting at the top of the points table. Third place went to Phil Barry on +2.

Twenty-four hours later Joe Selway and Greg Guyatt were the winners of the Betterball Stableford.

The duo revelled in the warm conditions as they racked up a superb score of 47 points to win by three from Gavin Jenkins and John Ham.

Two points further back and taking third place was the pairing of Nigel Hodges and Bob Masterman.

The Paul Wynne Memorial Trophy was also hosted at Brean on Saturday, with almost 70 players taking part in the event.

A combination of members from Brean and Fosseway plus a few guests took to the course in the two-player scramble event and many good scores were returned.

None of them could beat the nett 58 posted by Brean’s John Cullinan and Fosseway’s Gary Wilcox as they took the Trophy.

The runner-up position was decided by a countback with Fosseway’s Paul Rose and Brean’s Lyn Bird beating the all-Brean duo of Dan Broom and Gavin Jenkins after a countback, with both pairs scoring nett 59.

Dan West won his first competition at Brean, after his 40-point return in the Midweek Stableford saw him top the leaderboard.

He won by one from his playing partner Kevin White and Lee Roberts-Neale, who both scored 39 points.

White was awarded the runner-up spot after a countback over the back nine.
