Middlezoy 164-9 beat Burnham-on-Sea 163 by 1 wkt

BURNHAM-ON-SEA 1st XI came within one wicket of notching up their first win of the season but were denied by fellow strugglers Middlezoy on Saturday.

Having opted to bat first, Burnham’s innings was dominated by a stellar 72 from opening batsman Dave Worthington.

He received little in the way of meaningful support, with the next best score being Craig Scriven’s 15 as several Burnham batsmen made starts but failed to kick on.

The tail was mopped up by Nathan Peppard (3-23) as Burnham were bowled out for 163 in the 35th over.

Burnham made a good start with the ball as Peter Harris (2-39) clean bowled Ben Robinson for 11 to provide the much-needed early breakthrough.

Barney Dillow made an impressive 54 at the top of the order for Middlezoy, though the visitors continued to take wickets at regular intervals as Scriven’s superb spell of 5-28 kept the game in the balance.

The hosts crept over the line with just under 12 overs to spare, however, ensuring Burnham remain winless after their first eight games.

Paul Grant (1-23) and A. Smith (1-22) were the other wicket takers for Burnham.

This coming weekend marks the halfway point of the season, with Burnham hosting sixth-placed Shapwick & Polden 2nds looking for a victory to give them confidence going into the second half of the campaign.
