CRICKET: Burnham-on-Sea beaten but Lympsham & Belvedere win

BURNHAM were put in to bat at Temple Cloud, where runs were aplenty on Saturday.

Openers Pete Harris and Dave Worthington set about the home attack with expansive shots until Harris was the first to go for 21.

Worthington was joined by skipper Rob Driver but fell for a fine 41 with Burnham making good progress.

Driver and Bradley House pushed on in the middle of the innings until Driver fell for 54 in the quest for quick runs.

House continued to build his innings and he and Jim Bloodworth carried through to the final over, House unbeaten on 59 and Bloodworth on 31.

Temple Cloud’s opening pairing of Miles Hackett and Simon Curtis also revelled in the conditions, laying the foundation of a solid reply as Andy Birkett and Peter Harris toiled in the afternoon sun.

A slick piece of fielding from Sam Lewis saw the end of Curtis for 31 but in came Andrew Mortimer to join Hackett.

By the time the two were separated, the game was almost up.

Hackett went on to hit 57 before falling victim to Craig Scriven but Mortimer produced an array of strokes to end unbeaten on 108 to secure the points.

Rob Driver claimed the only other wicket to fall as cloud reached 247-3 with three overs and seven wickets in hand.

This was better form from Burnham in a difficult season.

And it doesn’t get any easier as, on Saturday, they entertain leaders Street.

Lympsham & Belvedere 1st XI 174-6 beat North Newton 146 by 28 runs

AFTER being put in to bat on a lively track, Lympsham made a disastrous start, losing skipper Mike Hosey for four and Jack Luff for a duck in the early overs.

Dave Luff stood firm, however, and, with Neil Chadwick, the pair set about stabilising the innings.

Chadwick was eventually run out for a vital 38 and Dave Luff fell for 30 but it left the way open for Sam McCrea and Nathan Hancock to pick up the cudgel.

They took the score past the hundred mark before McCrea was out five short of his half-century, leaving Hancock (26no) to see out the innings to reasonable a total of 174-6.

McCrea also made inroads into the Newton innings as wickets fell regularly.

Although four of the top five batsmen reached double figures, only Cameron Street (37) made any real impression.

After he fell, the innings petered out as McCrea returned to take two late wickets which finally sealed Newton’s fate at 146 all out - 28 runs short.

McCrea ended with fine figures of 3-13 off nine overs while there were also two wickets apiece for Andy Taylor, Nilanjan Chatterjee and Jack Luff.

On Saturday, Lympsham entertain mid-table Watchet.

HUNTSPILL & District opener Sam Lillycrop put Barrington’s bowlers to the sword in their Division 4 encounter on Saturday.

Batting first, Huntspill, through Lillycrop and Nick Slack set off at a fast pace, with Slack being the first to fall for a fine 45.

Thomas Garner carried on the onslaught, hitting a quick-fire 29, then it was the turn of Thomas Garner.

He and Lillycrop increased the pace before the latter was out for a sparkling 119 which included 14 4s and three 6s.

Randall (63no) and Matt Counsell (30no) blasted Huntspill to a closing total of 327-3.

Barrington’s batsmen were always chasing runs and with Matt Counsell adding 4-48 to his performance, they were all out for 176.

In Division 6N, Burnham 2s were well beaten by Shapwick & Polden 3s after being held to 128-9.

Top score was Josh Batt on 27 but Russ Edwards (3-14 off 8) and Peter Royall (3-27 off 8) dominated proceedings.

In a quickfire reply, Shapwick lost seven wickets to pass their target in the 18th over, Jack Morgan taking 3-33.

A reduced East Huntspill team took a beating at the hands of Churchill, who posted 269-5 as Kyran Gale hit a ton and Ian Chadwick 61.

After openers Paul Gass (26) and George Gass (13) were out it was all over in 12 overs, Gale taking 5-14 in a total of 53-7.

Wedmore 1sts won their top-of-the-table clash with Horrington by 41 runs with a fine all-round performance.

Batting first, Wedmore’s top six all reached big double figure scores, Paul Whittaker leading the way with 54 as they settled for 218-7.

Horrington’s reply relied on Graham Russell (45) and Sam Vincent (62) but, once they were dismissed, Wedmore’s bowlers took over with Josh Burgess and Will MacArthur taking three wickets apiece in a total of 177.

Huntspill & District 2s’ batting crumbled to 102 all out in the face of leaders Butleigh 2s’ attack.

Only Steve Cavill (42) made any headway.

Butleigh’s reply stuttered throughout as Louis Wright produced a fine 5-28 spell to keep Huntspill in with a chance in Division 7N.

But a late, unbeaten 39 from Seth Higgins saw them home.

High-flying Lympsham & Belvedere 2s kept in the promotion hunt with a 91-run win against Weston 4s.

Lympsham’s Brian Hosey hit 35 in a total of 194, then Dan Berry’s spell of 4-17 off eight reduced Weston to 103 all out.

Mark failed to raise a side against Frome, forfeiting the points and, in Division 8N, Wedmore picked up 35 points as Peasedown St John 2s forfeited their match.
