A CHARITY golf day was held at Brean Golf Club last Friday in aid of BARB (Burnham Area Rescue Boat).

It was the first time a golf day had been held for this cause which also forms part of the 2018 Brean Captain’s Charities.

The event was a Pairs Betterball Stableford event and the sun shone on the competitors as they took on the well-presented layout at Brean Leisure Park.

The winners, with an excellent 46-point total, were Brean members Wayne Barrett and Eric Jones.

The formidable duo won by a single point from two pairs on 45.

Another Brean member, Jim Puddy, was joined by Dave Perrett to take second on a back nine countback from former Brean professional David Haines and his daughter, Jessie.

JOHN Rabbetts recovered from a disastrous hole on the notorious 12th at Brean to win the July Monthly Medal.

The 22 handicapper bounced back with a couple of nett birdies late in his round to finally produce a winning scorecard that he has threatened for some time.

His nett 65 was the best of the day and gave him top spot in Division 3, two clear of runner-up John Ham.

Rabbetts’ handicap was swiftly reduced by a couple of strokes at the end of play as well.

Both of the other Divisions were won with nett 66s. Russell Shaw was the winner in Division 1 ending the day one clear of Dan Broom, who had posted the lowest gross score of the day with a 72.

Jerry Brueford was the final winner of the day as Division 2 glory came his way courtesy of another nett 66.

He won by two strokes from Tony Richards.

Brian Read had the best score on Sunday in the Super Series round. He scored 43 points in the Stableford competition to win by one from Stewart Garrett and with it reduce his handicap to 13.

A third player reached the 40-point mark and that was John Cullinan who finished two points shy of runner-up Garrett.

The Seniors enjoyed another home victory with their Vivary Park counterparts being the latest opponents.

They won 4½-1½ to maintain their good run of form on their home turf.

Captain Chris Stephens decided against a team of the day but singled out two players of the day for their significant contributions towards getting points on the board.

Stephens witnessed one of these players first hand as his partner Mike Short played some superb golf in their win, as did Bill Marlow, who partnered an out-of-sorts Bob Toller to another Brean win.

While the Seniors played their counterparts at Brean on Thursday, the Ladies’ section travelled in the opposite direction to take on the ladies of Vivary Park in a friendly.

It was a closely-contested match which resulted in a 2-2 draw.

Sue Wright and Liz Blackwell and Lesley Millard and Debbie Windmill won their games to claim the draw.

BURNHAM & Berrow’s rising golf star Mimi Rhodes ensured England signed off with a victory at the European Girls’ Team Championship at Forsgårdens, in Sweden, at the weekend.

Rhodes, who is 16, is two years younger than most of her team-mates and won her tie 4&2 against Germany’s Marie Bechtold in the final match of the competition as England won 4-1.

England finished seventh out of 19 teams, with Italy winning the final 6-1 against Spain.
