LEE Corfield has added the West Region PGA Assistants’ Championship to the national title he won at Farleigh Golf Club last month.

The Burnham & Berrow Golf Club assistant finished in a tie for fifth in the main championship at The Players Club near Bristol, after two three-under-par rounds of 69, for a 138 total.

This left him four shots behind winner Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge).

Meanwhile, Burnham & Berrow golfer Graham Yates has accepted the nomination to become president elect of England Golf for 2019, with a view to becoming president in 2020.

After playing golf around the world, Yates has settled at the links course which will stage the English women’s strokeplay championship in 2020, coinciding with his year as president.

Yates said: “Burnham & Berrow suits me very well as a genuine mix of the traditional values and etiquette of golf, a very good test of the game, but probably and more importantly as a golf club responding to the changing needs, pressures and reality of golf in the 21st century.”

*** ON Sunday, two Open events ran alongside each other at Brean.

The annual Mixed Open Fourball for the Anniversary Bowl was joined by an Open Men’s Fourball and one family dominated both events.

Millie Jones, aged 13, was the catalyst behind the success of her and her father Steve in the mixed event, as their 45 points beat the rest of the field by three.

Team captain elect – Trevor Pitt and Lyn Bird – were second on countback with 42, just edging out John and Bet Gazzard.

In the men’s event another Jones topped the leaderboard, Steve’s brother Paul joining forces with Neil Barker to return 42 points.

Martyn Cahill and Jason Kidley (40) were second, and Tony Groves and Stewart Garrett (39) third.

The previous Sunday, The Margaret Copp Chalice Scramble was won with an exceptional round by Team Jones – Paul, Steve and David, plus club captain Mike Carter.

They ended five strokes clear of Simon Baunton, Dave Porter, Steve Eley and Roger Vaughan, with ladies club champion Lyn Bird and the trio of Edmondsons – Ron, Don and Linda – in third.

Barry Brindley won the August Stableford with 44 points.

His return was the leading one in Division 3 as he headed home Tony Osborne by seven points.

The second best score of the day went to John Cullinan, in Division 2, with 43.

He enjoyed a two-point winning margin over Geoff Hill, while Phil Barry was third.

Russell Shaw was the top dog in Division 1 with 42 points, three clear of Murray Parsons, with Leighton Jenkins third.

The Edmondson family are certainly collecting a fair number of trophies between them this summer.

Linda added another to her cabinet with a win in the Ladies Flag event on Thursday.

She finished her allotted shots in the fairway on the 18th hole, which was to be the furthest around the course any of the competitors got on a breezy morning.

Second place went to Lesley Millard, as Liz Blackwell took third.

The previous day, Brean Ladies paid a visit to Woodspring Golf Club and beat their hosts 2-1.

The August Seniors Stableford was claimed by Mike Allen with a superb 44 points on Tuesday, leading home John Procter and John Cranley by five.

Division 2 honours went to Bob Toller, ahead of Ian Raymond and Tony Tissington.

Midweek Stableford specialist Bob Smith added another win to his growing tally of victories this summer after scoring 41 points on Wednesday.

He won comfortably from Trevor Searle (32), who edged out Mike Smith on a countback for second spot.
