BURNHAM-ON-SEA Hockey Club return to action this Saturday, away to ECVH in Cullompton (11am start).

Burnham Ladies play in Sedgemoor Division 1 of the West Clubs Women’s Hockey League, and once again they will be looking to consolidate their position.

Their first home match of the campaign is the following weekend, with newly-promoted Chard the visitors for a 10am start at King Alfred Sports Centre (TA9 3EE).

Burnham have warmed up for the season with friendlies against higher-ranked opponents, which have proved to be very tough tests.

Somerset Gryphons put six past them, and they then lost 7-2 against North Somerset.

The Blues were 4-0 down at half time in the latter fixture, but they rallied with second-half goals from Kerry Harvey and Sarah Johnson.

Goalkeeper Imogen Wright was voted player of the match, having made several quality saves, and she will be sorely missed when she goes off to university.

Having also lost players to injury, work and pregnancy ahead of the forthcoming season, Burnham are encouraging more players to join their small club – both young and old.

Training is on Mondays at King Alfred School, from 7pm to 9pm (juniors 7-8pm), with a fitness and hockey coach.
