Avon 37, Burnham-on-Sea 31

BURNHAM-ON-SEA threw away an 11-point lead as they succumbed to Avon on Saturday.

The visitors pounced on mistakes in the home defence to build their lead, Tom Stevens and Ash Cutter going over.

Batchelor and Harwood hit back for Avon, only for two Jude Donnelly tries to hand Burnham a 26-15 lead at the break.

But the hosts came out all guns blazing after the interval, Harwood and Burnell’s tries putting them into the lead.

Donnelly completed his hat-trick as the pendulum swung back in the visitors’ favour, but hopes of an away win were cruelly extinguished.

Mutlow scored in the corner with four minutes left, and Batchelor’s penalty sealed the win.

The Seasiders will be hopeful of getting back on track when they host Bristol Barbarians on Saturday – if the opposition turn up.

Barbarians have been unable to raise a side for their last two games.

Burnham skipper Ross McKechan said: “We controlled large parts of the game against a good side, but indiscipline in the last 15 minutes cost us.

“We kept letting them back in when we had just scored, so we never opened up that much of a cushion.

“We have had a tough start but I think we will soon be on a winning run if we keep these performance levels up.”
