BURNHAM-ON-SEA RFC are set for an exciting end to the season with a cup final and a promotion play-off on the horizon.

The Stags secured a play-off place without even kicking a ball on Saturday as Weston Hornets 2nds couldn’t raise a squad of registered players.

A match still took place, which Burnham comfortably won 68-12 after running in 10 tries on the 4G surface.

The tries were scored by Tom Wall, Will Hopkins (2), David Harris, Jude Donnelly, James Havercroft, Sam Wall, Eoghan Westoff, Stefan Pierce and Tom Chaffey.

The Stags have now made sure of second place ahead of Saturday’s final regular season fixture at home to Oldfield Old Boys.

Then, on Tuesday, April 16, Burnham return to Hornets’ 4G pitch to play the Somerset Vase final against Yatton looking to earn silverware - kick-off is at 7.30pm.

A date has not yet been set for the play-off, which will be against the side who finish second in Gloucester Premier - currently Bristol Saracens.

Burnham captain Ross McKechan said: “It was a comfortable victory on Saturday.

“Having been given the game before kick off we didn’t put our all into it, which was disappointing, but we still came out on top.

“We scored some well-worked tries and controlled lots of the game.

“It was an error-ridden match and we know we have to be better in the next couple of weeks.

“Jim Havercroft was man of the match with a solid performance in the lineout and the loose and it’s great to have him back after injury.

“The result means we have secured the second place play-off, a huge achievement for us.

“The boys have worked hard all year and I’m proud of how far we’ve come since this time last year.

“Before that, our focus is on Oldfield in our last league game of the season and, after losing comfortably at their place, we are keen to put that right.

“I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our supporters and sponsors for their continued support.

“We hope we can finish the season with some impressive performances with it all to play for.”

Burnham 2nds, who lost 45-12 at Winscombe last Saturday, round off their Somerset 2 South season at home to Wiveliscombe 2nds on Saturday.
