BURNHAM-ON-SEA RFC have the chance to complete a memorable season on Saturday when they welcome Bristol Saracens in their promotion play-off.

Having beaten Yatton 38-13 in last Tuesday’s Somerset RFU Vase final, Burnham now have an opportunity to return to Western Counties level at the first attempt following last season’s relegation.

Burnham finished second in Somerset Premier with 93 points, giving them home advantage over their opponents, runners-up in Gloucester Premier with 81.

Burnham stalwart Tim Piper, looking for his fourth promotion with the club, said: “The boys are massively enjoying it this season.

“After the season we had last year, to pick ourselves up and win one final, with another to look forward to, is testament to everyone involved.

“We have played them [Bristol Saracens] a few times over the years but not recently.

“They have had an almost identical season to us, finishing second in the league and winning their equivalent cup final, but we will focus on playing our own game.

“We have been the form team in our league since the turn of the year, so if we play like we have been we have a good chance.

“We are at full strength so there will be some tough decisions to make.

“Only 18 can play, so there are going to be some disappointed lads, but I’m sure they will join the rest of the crowd in getting behind us and cheering us on.”

Burnham are expecting a bumper crowd for Saturday’s match, which begins at 3pm.

“Having home advantage is massive – our support this year has been exemplary,” fly-half Piper said.

“The fans have got behind us no matter what and, when the noise levels rise at certain moments in games, it gives you that extra five per cent.”

Should Burnham win on Saturday, a decision will be made over the summer on whether they will be in Western Counties North or West next season.

THREE Burnham players – Eoghan Westoff, Sam Lewis and Adam Peters – represented Somerset’s county side against Leinster Juniors at Taunton RFC on Saturday.

“We have had positive feedback and they represented us really well,” Piper said.

“It is nice that we are finally getting some recognition.”
