ENMORE's Paul Martin’s Captains day was a huge success and, despite the poor weather, good scores were posted.

Simon Bamber won the overall event with 42; Tom Canavan, a future star with 41, was second and third Andrew Chambers with 39.

On the day, members managed to raise over £600 for the Captain's charities.

THE 29th Annual Sports Celebrity Am took place at Brean Golf Club last Wednesday and it was the first to be hosted entirely in the new multi-million pound Country Club building.

Twenty-five teams took the course after fuelling up on an excellent breakfast with high hopes of lifting the Tom Childs Memorial Trophy as well as supporting two worthy Charities, The Injured Jockeys Fund and St Margaret’s Hospice.

The course was presented in good shape from Robin Williams and his team of staff despite the issues posed by heavy rain.

Former Champion Jockey John Francome, 1987 Grand National winner Steve Knight and Jeff King joined Gloucester RFC’s Matt Banahan and Bristol City footballer Gary Owers.

Pete Trego and Max Waller, from Somerset County Cricket Club, and ex-Bristol Rovers footballer Tony Pounder and former World Darts Champion Bob Anderson also tee’d it up as part of the celebrity challenge.

Adam Lerwill, Josh Taylor and Rich Ross were joined by Burnham & Berrow Professional Graeme Biggs to accumulate a score of 91 points which saw them end up two clear of the field.

Runners-up were the Jones Bros Builders team consisting of Wayne Barrett, Phil Hodgson, David and Eric Jones.

Brean Ladies’ Captain Lyn Bird led her troops to third place with an 88-point return. Beryl Richards, Eileen Parnell and Millie Jones were her partners in crime that relegated the Fire at Will quarter to fourth spot.

Joe Lemon joined forces with his brother Will, Justin Phillips and Phil; Strange to score 87 points.

The final prizewinners were the Heineken UK team with John Francome as the Celebrity. Alongside Francome was Dave Willis, Mark Short and Rich Fisher who combined to return 85.

The day raised £5,000 and plans are already being made for the 30th anniversary edition of the event in 12 months time.

With the Club Championship being postponed until later in the year courtesy of the recent inclement weather, an impromptu Super Series round was played on Saturday.

The Individual Stableford from the white tees saw two players return 40 points and the countback regulations were brought into force to determine the winner.

It was Mark Jenkins who had the better back nine of the 40-pointers with Joe Selway in second.

Ian Rogers was third, a point behind.

Sunday’s Super Series was won by Dan and Tom Broom on 59, with runners-up Steve Mason and John Rabbetts on 61.

Third place went to Mark Elvins and Steve Barker on 62 after a countback with Mel Brown and Graham Foy.

Rain decimated the entry in the final round of the Seniors Captains Cup as many decided staying dry was a better option than trying to secure the silverware.

One of the few who ventured out was Jeff Milton and his nett 76 was good enough to sit alongside his magical nett 57 in round two to give him the overall Cup.

Runner-up just one stroke behind was John Cranley on 134 with George Stratford third with a 136 total.

The Seniors also made the short journey to Weston-super-Mare last week to play their Seniors in the first of the two annual matches.

The games were close but the hosts ended up the victorious one’s by a margin of 5-1.

Albeit a cold, blowy and rainy day Brean Ladies welcomed Vivary Ladies to play in a friendly.

Players from both sides were keen to attempt a match and thanks to a suggestion from Senior vice-captain Mike Short, the new nine hole layout was utilised for the contest.

Brean Ladies maintained their good form and won the match 3½-½.
