WELLINGTON staged one of the most remarkable fightbacks in the history of the Somerset Premier Cup 20 years ago today (October 13).

In a remarkable match, visitors Minehead were 3-0 up at half-time before having two players sent off in an action-packed second half which saw Wellington score six times, including a hat-trick for Simon Towler.

The night started so well for the Blues, who were two goals to the good inside 17 minutes through ex-Wellington striker Nick Stone and midfielder Damon Palfrey.

When substitute Nick Whyborn then beat Stuart Parris with a back-post header just after the half-hour, the tie looked as good as over.

The comeback began on 48 minutes when Towler fired home, and it was game on just six minutes later when Christian Woon - playing against his brother Nick - rose to head home a Towler cross.

A game littered with yellow cards boiled over on the hour when Minehead defender Dave Burr was sent off for swearing at the referee.

Wellington were rampant thereafter, scoring four times in the final 15 minutes.

Substitute Steve Jenkins headed home to equalise and Paul Pocock completed the turnaround with an 82nd-minute strike.

Towler headed home a Woon cross to make it five before Shane Porter received his second yellow card to leave Minehead down to nine men.

The hosts were then awarded a penalty as keeper Lee Ayres brought down Pocock and there could be only one man to take it.

Towler did the honours, converting from the spot to seal his hat-trick and the incredible comeback.

Wellington's victory set up a plum tie away at Taunton Town in the next round.
