Premier & Division 1 Cup
Watchet Town 1, Burnham Utd 0

BURNHAM United were unfortunate to lose 1-0 in the league cup, away at Premier Division side Watchet Town on Saturday.

Despite missing six regulars, Burnham took the game to their higher tier hosts from the start.

Ryan Stiles’ 25-yard free kick was superbly saved midway through the first half, before United goalkeeper Fraser McDiarmid was called into action 10 minutes before the interval, tipping over a long-range effort.

Watchet took the lead five minutes into the second half with a breakaway goal, finished off by Adam Jefferies.

Burnham continued to press throughout the half but, despite forcing a frantic last five minutes of corners, they were unable to get the goal to take the tie to penalties.

United will aim to bounce back from this first defeat of the season at home to Nailsea & Tickenham Reserves on Saturday (ko 3pm).

Division 2 & 3 Cup
Burnham United Reserves 0, Bishops Lydeard Reserves 3

BURNHAM Reserves’ cup pursuit ended at the first hurdle, with a home defeat against Division 3 rivals Bishops Lydeard Reserves.

Three first-half mistakes by the defensive line culminated in an uphill battle that was ultimately too great to overcome.

Burnham's young side can take solace in the half-time turnaround, having the lion’s share of possession and ruing missed chances in what would have otherwise been a dominating performance.

It's back to league duty next Saturday, when Burnham's three-game unbeaten league run faces a testing trip to Chew Magna.
