Division 1
Burnham United 2, Nailsea & Tickenham Res 0

BURNHAM United continued their fantastic start to the season with a 2-0 win over Nailsea & Tickenham Reserves on Saturday, to stay unbeaten and remain top of Division 1.

In a first half of few chances, Ryan Stiles had an effort from 25 yards turned away by the Nailsea goalkeeper, and the Burnham defence - superbly marshalled by skipper Russell Holley - restricted the visitors to a couple of long-range efforts.

It was the home side who took the lead just minutes from the end of the half, as Charlie Harding's exquisite ball found Jamie Merrick, who showed composure to smash it home.

The second half was like the first, with both teams having few chances.

The game sprung into action 20 minutes from the end, when Stiles dispossessed the Nailsea keeper by the corner flag and coolly slotted home, putting Burnham 2-0 up.

With Nailsea pushing forward to get back into the game, they were awarded a penalty 10 minutes from time, but it was put over the bar.

The win puts Burnham in good stead for the away trip to Street Reserves next Saturday.

Division 3
Chew Magna 6, Burnham Utd Res 2

BURNHAM United Reserves again rued defensive errors and missed opportunities in the defeat at promotion favourites Chew Magna.

Two lapses in concentration left United 2-0 down in the opening quarter of an hour, before hard work from veteran Scott Lismore set up the ever-persistent Cain Smith to halve the deficit before the interval.

A matter of inches and similar mistakes were the ever-present variables in the second half, as Burnham didn’t build on their dominating spells with the ball.

Late on, impact striker Mark Clitsome bullied two defenders before teeing up a long-range effort that outsmarted the home keeper to give Burnham a second-half consolation goal.
