SOMERSET all-rounder Lewis Gregory has signed a one-year contract extension which will see him remain at the club until the end of the 2022 season.

The 27-year-old’s current deal would have expired at the end of the 2021 campaign, but he has now committed himself to Somerset for another 12 months at least.

Gregory, who hails from Plymouth, worked his way up the Devon age groups, before graduating from the Somerset Academy in 2010 and making his 1st XI debut against Pakistan in September of that year.

This year's County Championship saw Gregory take 51 wickets at an average of 15.76, and he played in all 11 fixtures as Somerset won the One-Day Cup, while also topping the team's bowling averages in the T20 Blast.

Those strong performances across all three formats have been rewarded with a call-up to the England IT20 squad for the tour of New Zealand this winter.

Gregory – a former England Under-19 captain – hit 29no off 11 balls in England's most recent warm-up match in New Zealand.

On signing the contract extension, Gregory said: “It’s a really exciting time for the club and I’m delighted to have committed my future to Somerset because it’s the club that I love.

“To win a trophy with this group of players was incredibly special and hopefully that will be the first of many.

“Over the last few weeks we’ve seen the majority of our young players signing new contracts, which is great for the future of the club and I’m thrilled that I’m going to be able to play a part in that.

"The club is on the verge of something special and I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in the next few years.”

Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry commented: “Lewis has been one of our most consistently impressive performers across all three formats over the last few years.

“He is an outstanding player, a genuine leader and his contributions on the field have won us a number of matches.

"His exceptional performances have rightly been rewarded with an international call-up this winter.

“There is no doubt about it; Lewis is an all-rounder of genuine quality and everyone associated with the club is delighted that he has signed this extension.”
