West Clubs Women’s League
Brunel Division 1
Burnham-on-Sea 1, Mid Somerset 6

BURNHAM-ON-SEA ladies came unstuck in their last league game before the Christmas break, as leaders Mid Somerset came from behind to win comfortably.

The Blues began in fine style, winning a penalty flick after only five minutes, and it was calmly slotted home by captain Sarah Johnson to put her side ahead.

This proved to be the only weakness shown by the Mid Somerset keeper.

Although always in the game, and often in the attacking D, determined work by Blues forwards Amy Edmundson and Kerry Harvey, ably supported by Ellie Bishop, didn’t yield any further goals.

Mid Somerset equalised within two minutes and continued to push forward in numbers, to overload the defence of Emma Fellows, Emma Ballard, Sarah Johnson and Caroline Hunt.

A goalmouth scramble wrong-footed goalkeeper Lucy Stacey, and Burnham found themselves 3-1 down at half-time.

The hosts were in positive mood for the second half, winning several short corners but being denied by the opposition keeper.

The midfield of Hattie Rogers, Macy Lucas and Rebecca Smith all worked hard at both ends of the pitch, while player of the match Ballard was cool in defence, marshalling the backline and making crucial clearances.

The result was 6-1 to Mid Somerset, showing why they are league leaders at the halfway point.

This Saturday, Burnham are due to have a friendly against South Gloucestershire.
