Division 1
Staplegrove 2, Burnham United 5

BURNHAM started 2020 with a convincing 5-2 win away at Staplegrove, keeping the Seasiders third in the league table.

The visitors took the lead midway though the first half, when Joe Selway’s through ball set up Warren Whitfield to slot home.

The home side equalised shortly afterwards with a header, but United’s lead was restored on 40 minutes as Cameron Birch fired a right-footed screamer into the top corner, and it remained 2-1 at half-time.

Burnham upped their game in the second half and got their reward when Curtis Bradshaw rounded the goalkeeper and calmly slotted home.

Kane Powell then scored his second of the season with a left-footed strike.

It was 5-1 after a scramble in the penalty area; Josh Watkins sent the ball goalwards and the keeper punched into his own net under pressure from Russell Holley.

Staplegrove scored 10 minutes from time as the game ended 5-2.

Division 3
Uphill Castle A 2, Burnham United A 0

BURNHAM had the advantage of the strong wind being behind them in the first half, but didn’t take advantage and the half-time score was 0-0.

Uphill took full advantage of having the wind at their backs after the break, taking the lead early in the half and netting their second after a mistake in the Burnham defensive line.

Division 4
Burnham United B 0, Clevedon United A 7

ON a difficult playing surface, it was the visitors who started strongly, pressing Burnham’s defence constantly.

Clevedon scored their first goal after 15 minutes, and punished some poor defending with three more in quick succession to make it 4-0 at the break.

Burnham started the second half brighter with strong link-up play and fast counter-attacking, but luck was not on their side, and unfortunate slips at the back - due to the deteriorating surface - allowed Clevedon to score three more.

Ricky Smith ended the day with a hat-trick for the visitors, aided by Jonah Murray (2), Dan Fowler and Mitchell Scott.
