Firebrands 4ths 2, Burnham-on-Sea 2

BURNHAM-ON-SEA had to fight hard for a point away to Firebrands 4th XI on Saturday, which they fully deserved in the end.

The Blues had to come from behind twice, but could have stolen all three points were it not for some wayward finishing.

Despite conceding first the visiting defence looked very solid and composed throughout.

They passed the ball out of defence calmly and their first goal came from pushing up high.

Nicki Glanville played an exquisite pass into Amy Edmundson just outside the D, she played a one-two with Kerry Harvey and then pulled the ball back perfectly for Harvey to tap in.

With the score 1-1 at half-time, the match was evenly poised and remained so as both teams attacked and defended well as a unit.

The home side put themselves back in front with a rebound goal after Blues goalkeeper Lucy Stacey had made a smart one-handed stop, but she had little else to save.

Hattie Rogers and Macy Lucas played well in midfield, while Caroline Hunt looked assured in defence but was always looking to create something going forward.

In fact it was Hunt’s determined play which forced a penalty corner from which Burnham equalised again.

Edmundson’s powerful strike took a deflection on its way through to wrongfoot the keeper and bring her side level.

Sarah Johnson went close, as did Harvey in the D, as the Blues pushed for a winner - but a draw was a fair result.

Player of the match: Kerry Harvey

Burnham’s next match is on Saturday, February 22, when they host Old Bristolians 2nds (9.45am at King Alfreds Sports Centre).

The Blues are sixth in the table, with Old Bristolians one place and one point behind them.
