SOMERSET spinners Jack Leach and Dom Bess have both been named in the 16-man England squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

Leach has had a tough winter battling illness, including a bout of sepsis, and has not played since the first Test against New Zealand in November, having returned home early from the tour of South Africa.

He has been recovering at home in Taunton and national selector Ed Smith said: "Jack Leach has recovered from his illness he picked up in South Africa and is now healthy and keen to resume his Test career."

Bess took up the role as England's spinner in South Africa and seized his opportunity, taking eight wickets in two Tests including his maiden international five-for as England won the series 3-1.

He retains his place for the two-Test series and the continued absence of Moeen Ali from the Test arena raises the very real possibility of the Somerset spin twins lining up in the same England team for the first time.

Leach enjoyed great success in Sri Lanka in the winter of 2018, taking 18 wickets at 21.38 in England's 3-0 series win.

Jos Buttler retains his place in the squad, though Surrey wicketkeeper Ben Foakes will apply pressure on the former Somerset wicketkeeper if Buttler endures another lean series.

There is no place for Jonny Bairstow, while Jimmy Anderson will sit out the tour as he focuses on becoming fully fit for the start of the domestic season.
