Newcastle United midfielder Matthew Longstaff could soon find himself at Watford, after holding talks with Udinese.

The 20-year-old has reached a deadlock in his conversations with the Magpies over a contract extension, with his current deal due to expire this summer, and is now considering moves elsewhere.

Reports emerged earlier this week that Longstaff has been offered close to £30,000-per-week by Udinese, after flying out for talks before lockdown measures were put in place, however it is widely believed that the Serie A side would not be his final destination.

Such a contract would make him the highest-paid player at Udinese and the Watford Observer has been told that representatives in Newcastle believe he would be destined for the Hornets rather than the Italian top flight.

While it is also understood that Longstaff would prefer to stay at St James' Park, the impasse in talks surrounding his deal mean that he has had to consider options from elsewhere.

Various reports suggest the likes of Inter Milan and Marseille are also interested in acquiring his signature, but Udinese's interest is believed to be the most genuine up to now.

The link between Watford and Udinese needs no further explanation, with the Pozzo family frequently shuttling players between the two clubs.

Should Longstaff move directly to Vicarage Road from Newcastle, a compensation package would need to be agreed and would likely run into the millions, whereas Udinese would only have to fork out a fraction of that price, leaving them at liberty to move the player to Watford, likely on loan to begin with, before making the deal permanent further down the line, should things work out for him.

The prospective takeover of Newcastle United could change Longstaff's situation at Newcastle, but until that is given the green light by the Premier League, the midfielder's future looks destined to be away from the North East.
