SOMERSET'S Dom Bess scored valuable lower order runs for England on the second day of the first Test against the West Indies, finishing unbeaten on 31.
Bess' 44-ball innings, which featured four fours, saw him end up as the hosts' third highest scorer.
Captain Ben Stokes (43) and ex-Somerset player Jos Buttler (35) built a fine sixth-wicket partnership, rescuing England from 87-5, but they tumbled from 154-5 to 157-8 as West Indies skipper Jason Holder claimed 6-42.
Bess survived the onslaught, however, and alongside James Anderson (10) took England past the 200-run mark.
Anderson fell to Shannon Gabriel (4-62) soon after, though, as the hosts were all out for 204.
The West Indies reached 57-1 at the close, with Anderson trapping John Campbell (28) lbw.
