In the week that his twin brother Jamie agreed a move to Surrey for the 2021 season, this deal comes as welcome news for the West Country club.

It means that the 26-year-old all-rounder, who made his debut for Somerset in April 2012, will remain at the Cooper Associates County Ground until at least the end of the 2023 season.

Overton has taken more than 370 wickets and scored in excess of 3,000 runs in more than 170 games for Somerset, and showed his continuing importance to the county with match figures of 7-69 against Glamorgan this week.

He has also been recognised at international level, making his England debut in the 2017 Ashes series and going on to play in four Tests and a One-Day International.

After putting pen to paper, Overton said: "I’m obviously delighted to have signed a new contract with my home club.

"The dream was always to play for Somerset and win trophies with the club.

"The success that we had last year [winning the One-Day Cup and finishing second in the County Championship] has given me that extra drive to go on and win that elusive Championship that we all want.

“I feel very settled here, it’s close to home, the squad that we’ve got is so good and I feel like I’m in a really good place at the moment.

“The members and supporters are a massive part of this club and they help us so much as a side.

"The support that we get in all formats is amazing, so hopefully we can keep winning games for them."

Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry commented: “Everyone connected with Somerset County Cricket Club is delighted that Craig has extended his contract and committed his future to the club.

"He has a wealth of experience and is consistently one of country’s leading performers.

“His contributions both on and off the field continue to add real value to the club and it has been a genuine pleasure to see him blossom since he made his First Class debut as an 18-year-old.

“We look forward to him continuing to pull on the Wyvern and being a match winner for Somerset for the foreseeable future.”
