SOMERSET captain Tom Abell admitted to having "mixed feelings" after the first day of their do-or-die Bob Willis Trophy match away to Worcestershire.

The winner of this week's match at Blackfinch New Road will top the Central Group, and stand a good chance to reaching the five-day final of the competition, to be played at Lord's later this month.

Having won the toss and opted to bat, Somerset posted a solid total of 251 all out from 83.1 overs, on a green-tinged pitch that offered plenty of encouragement for seam bowlers.

Abell top scored with 59, while Eddie Byrom added 30, but it took crucial lower order contributions from Lewis Gregory (37), Josh Davey (28) and the returning Jack Leach (21) to secure two batting points for the visitors, after they had been reduced to 134-6 earlier on.

Dillon Pennington and Ed Barnard picked up three wickets apiece for Worcestershire, who ended the day on 14-0 as openers Daryl Mitchell and Jake Libby survived five probing overs from Davey and Craig Overton.

Afterwards, Abell reflected: "Mixed feelings to be honest. At certain stages through today, I certainly would have taken 250.

“But there were also times when we got on top and didn’t quite capitalise.

“There were a few soft dismissals, including myself, but I would say honours were pretty even after day one.

“We rode our luck at times, especially in that first session, played and missed a fair bit and I thought Worcestershire bowled very well.

“But equally, having done the hard work, it’s probably disappointing to have lost a few of the wickets in the manner we did.

“We’ve got ourselves in positions where we could have put them under a lot of pressure.

"Their bowlers had bowled a lot and we had taken them deep into their third and fourth spells.

“But ultimately we lost wickets at the wrong time and weren’t able to put our foot down later in the day."

WESTERN Storm captain Sophie Luff top scored to lead her side to an 86-run victory over Sunrisers at Chelmsford.

Beaten at home in their last match, the Storm bounced back to record a second Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy win - making 265-6 and then dismissing their hosts for 179.

Luff stroked nine fours in an innings of 85 from 115 balls, sharing stands of 80 with Alex Griffiths and 55 with Claire Nicholas.

Luff's fellow Somerset player Lauren Filer then took wickets with her first two balls of the tournament, and Fi Morris (5-26) finished Sunrisers off.

Western Storm's next match is at home to South East Stars this Friday, at the Bristol County Ground.
