Pre-season friendly
Burnham-on-Sea 2, Mid Somerset 5

HAVING beaten Bridgwater 9-0 the previous week, Burnham-on-Sea Hockey Club ladies came unstuck at the end of their pre-season, losing to a strong and quick Mid Somerset side.

They were under the cosh immediately, as the visitors attacked in waves, forcing goalkeeper Lucy Stacey into making several top saves and Nicki Glanville several fine tackles and blocks.

The pressure eventually told, but the Blues were unlucky in how they conceded the goals; the ball just did not bounce for them and they found themselves 3-0 down.

Glanville provided another assist, though, with a glorious ball out to Amy Edmundson, who slipped in strike partner Kerry Harvey to pull a goal back for Burnham just before half-time.

Macy Lucas came on and made a difference in midfield with her energy, and the Blues began to get up the pitch more in the second half.

Caroline Hunt was superb throughout, playing several different positions as Burnham tried everything to get back in the game, and did score again.

Harvey and Edmundson combined in the D, the ball was only half-cleared, and Lucas was there to sweep it in first time.

Burnham could not keep the ball long enough to inflict any more damage, however, and as the game became even more stretched they conceded two more goals.

That was in spite of Stacey, who was inspired in goal, threw herself at everything and fully deserved her player of the match vote.

This coming Saturday, Burnham start their league campaign at home to Weston-super-Mare (9.45am).
