BURNHAM Rugby Club defeated Wiveliscombe 23-6 at home on the weekend.

The match between the Stags and Wivvy was an old rivalry with the two sides last meeting in the 2018/2019 campaign where Wiveliscombe won both encounters.

There was plenty of away fans who made the trip; however they watched their team be well beaten by Burnham.

A few minutes into the game the Stags were penalised at the breakdown and the opposition flyhalf slotted home the penalty to put his side 3-0 up.

Tim Piper of Burnham, levelled the score after eight minutes of play and soon after he then put the Stags in front with another fine penalty.

As the game settled, Burnham began to gain momentum, going through the phases keeping Wiveliscombe on the backfoot.

The first try of the game came through a brilliant run from outside centre for Burnham, Ryan Beard, he slipped a couple of tackles to score with Piper adding the extras, 13-3.

From the restart, Wiveliscombe were ferocious in the loose and turned the ball over on many occasions, giving them a lot of possession.

Another penalty was conceded by Burnham and the Wivvy number 10 slotted the conversion over the posts, making the score 13-6.

Burnham responded quickly through a Tim Piper penalty conversion to extended the lead to 10 points.

In form try scorer, Will Hopkins made a daring run through the Wiveliscombe defence and scored again, extending his side's lead to 23-6 at half time.

The second half was a stark contrast to the first as it was scoreless.

This was in part due to a strong defensive effort from Burnham in the second half.

Wiveliscombe ran out of ideas and were unable to penetrate the Stags defensive line and were turned over several times out wide when there strong pack couldn’t support the backs in line.

Next Saturday the Stags are home again to Chard RFC; the sides last met in the 2017/2018 season.

As well as that the 2nd XV are also at home, they kick off there campaign against Minehead 2nd XV, both games kick off at 3pm.
