Regional 2 Tribute South West: Crediton 45 Winscombe 35

At the weekend, the Winscombe 1st XV travelled to Crediton and suffered their third defeat in as many matches to slip to seventh in Regional 2 Tribute South West, albeit with two games in hand, writes John Podpadec.

Winscombe started brightly and were soon on the scoreboard with a well-taken try beneath the posts by fly-half Ollie Walrond, which was converted by centre Sam Dearsley.

Some determined Crediton defence then kept the visitors at bay for a long period, but when the ball broke to Aaron Thompson at the edge of a driving maul, the hooker crossed in the right corner for Winscombe’s second try, the conversion doubling their score.

Crediton gathered themselves and shortly before the break scored a well-taken converted try cutting the halftime deficit to 7-14.

Crediton came out strongly at the start of the second half and went on to score four unanswered tries before Winscombe could put together a response.

Eventually, prop Simon Thompson, with a typically barging run, broke through down the left and scored in the corner.

But this was only a momentary reprise as Crediton extended their lead with a further two converted tries.

As the high-scoring match came to an end, Winscombe ran in two consolation tries.

A second for Aaron Thompson to seal the losing bonus point and on the stroke of full-time a well-worked try in the left corner for winger Harley Walton, Sam Dearsley converting from the touchline to wrap up a perfect kicking display.

Next weekend, Winscombe host Penzance and Newlyn at Longfields and will look to end the present losing streak and get their season back on track.
