Regional 2 Tribute South West: Winscombe 17 Penzance & Newlyn 39

At the weekend, the Winscombe 1st XV entertained Penzance & Newlyn in Regional 2 Tribute South West, writes John Podpadec.

The Cornish visitors started brightly, and after some poor defensive kicking, opened the scoring with a well-worked and converted try near the posts.

They extended their lead soon after with a second try, after a loose ball was hacked downfield resulting in a frantic kick chase to the corner.

Despite some strong running, especially by lock and captain for the day Aled Corcoran, who at one point crossed the line but could not ground the ball, Winscombe made no first-half impression on the scoreboard.

Penzance went into the break with a 12-0 lead.

Playing down the Longfield slope in the second period, Winscombe were soon on the offensive and were pressing inside the visitors’ 22, but a loose pass was deftly intercepted by the Penzance No 8, Jamie Eddy, who galloped up-field and set up a try in the left corner.

From the re-start Winscombe eventually got into their stride and after securing possession some good phase play took them back deep into the Penzance 22.

When the ball was moved down the line to the right, fly-half Dougie Ford broke through to score in the corner, centre Sam Dearsley converting from the touchline.

Penzance dug deep and extended their lead with a penalty and a bonus point try, and appeared to be moving out of sight, but Winscombe rallied with back-to-back tries for returning flanker Oscar Browne and fullback Ollie Walrond, the latter set up by a typically aggressive charge by prop Simon Thompson.

Hopes of a come-back were snuffed out in no uncertain terms, however, when in the last 10 minutes the visitors ran in a further three tries to secure a handsome win.

Winscombe entertain North Petherton next weekend at Longfield in the re-arranged fixture from earlier in the season.
