New Zealand international Henry Nicholls has signed for Somerset County Cricket Club.

The 34-year-old will join the team for the remainder of the season and is set to feature in the final six matches of the Rothesay County Championship, starting with the four-day game against Essex on August 20.

Mr Nicholls said: "As a cricketer, you want to test yourself in different conditions around the world and take on the best players, and this is the perfect opportunity for me to do exactly that and to help contribute to some success for Somerset, and I can't wait to get going."

An experienced left-handed batter, Mr Nicholls has played 60 Test matches for New Zealand, scoring 3,358 runs at an average of 39.50, including a career-best 200 not out.

He has also featured in 141 First Class matches, amassing more than 9,000 runs at an average of 42.51, and has represented his country in 92 ODIs and 10 T20 internationals.

Andy Hurry, Somerset's director of cricket, said: "Henry is a batter of genuine quality and is an excellent addition to the squad.

"He has played and performed at the very highest level and has a wealth of experience to add to our batting lineup."

Mr Hurry believes Mr Nicholls will also have an impact off the field.

He said: "In addition to being a high-quality performer, his experience and knowledge of the game will certainly be of benefit to our aspiring players.

"Having previous experience of English domestic cricket is always useful insight, and we very much look forward to his contributions for the remainder of the campaign."
