IT has been a case of medal after medal for Monarchs Acro Gym Club in Burnham lately.

Gymnasts, pictured, are still buzzing after competing in the South-West preliminary acrobatics competition in Taunton.

Monarchs came up against 20 clubs from all over the region and proudly claimed three golds, two silvers and a bronze.

Men’s four, Sean McKenna, Conor McKenna, Jacob Baker and Joseph Blake, claimed gold in grade three.

Sean McKenna and Joseph Blake also picked up gold in grade three men’s pairs after performing two solid routines, with almost maximum difficulty.

Sophie McCardle and Sian Coogan secured their first gold medal for their partnership in grade four women's pairs following many hours of hard training.

Jacob Baker and Joe Reed complimented each other in their routine to gain silver for grade one men's pairs.

Emily Shortland and Jazmine Bassett proudly received silver in grade three women's pairs after working within the partnership for only a few weeks.

Chloe Sadiq, Emily Shortland and Emily Woolley won a well deserved bronze for two well executed routines.

Poppy Broom, Shannon House and Mia Rowlands performed their routines fluently, with high difficulty and gained fifth place overall.

All gold medal winners from the competition will form the South-West Team in the finals in Stoke on Trent in May.

Tony Merrett, head coach and club manager, said: “It was a great weekend for the club, and it's all down to the hard work of the gymnasts, coaches, helpers and not forgetting the support of the parents. “For some of the gymnasts this was their first competition, training between 11 and 18 hours a week, building up strength and flexibility, enhancing their confidence to compete in front of hundreds of people.

“Grade one category was very popular with over 48 partnerships providing fierce competition for all and the dedicated work of Monarchs shone through. The club is very proud of all its gymnasts.”

A group of 14 members from Monarchs are due to fly out to Maia in Portugal to represent the UK in a competition this weekend.
