Western Counties West
St Austell 46, Burnham-on-Sea 0

BURNHAM RFC made the long trip to face second-placed St Austell on Saturday, and were beaten by eight tries to none.

Despite the dreadful weather and some dogged defending from Burnham, tries from Chris Ashwin, Liam Freeman, George Knowles and Cav Boyer gave the hosts a 24-0 half-time lead.

Boyer, Knowles, Max Duggan and CJ Boyce crossed after the break to complete an emphatic win.

Burnham – yet to win this season – remain second bottom in the Western Counties West table, six points behind third-bottom Tiverton.

This Saturday they face a crunch match at home to basement side Sidmouth.

Somerset 2 South
Burnham-on-Sea 2nds 24, Yeovil 2nds 14

BURNHAM 2nd XV are sixth in the Somerset 2 South standings after beating Yeovil 2nds, who had been second in the table before the match.

After a strong start, they led through Ryan Dickson’s try, as he timed his run to catch Tim Piper’s quickly-taken penalty.

More quick thinking from Piper after Burnham won another penalty made it 10-0, only for Yeovil to hit back with a try and penalty for 10-8.

The home side regrouped, and good hands from Lee and Nick McKen provided the platform for Piper to go over under the posts, making it 17-8 at half time.

Burnham aimed to keep it tight after the break, and it was probably their strongest half of the season.

Strong carries by Alan House, Chris Marsh, Piper and Jamie Blyth kept Yeovil going backwards, and their only reward was another two pens.

Burnham sealed the win following a lineout 10m out, with Matthew Slater the driving force in the maul, and Piper finishing it off.

This Saturday Burnham go to 10th-placed Bridgwater & Albion 3rds.
