Combe St Nicholas 2, Burnham United 0

BURNHAM United went into Saturday’s game at second-bottom Combe St Nicholas knowing a win could put them top of Somerset County Division 1 West, but the team produced a poor performance and had a day to forget.

The afternoon didn’t start well, with midfielder Warren Mylum going off injured after five minutes, and on 20 minutes Burnham were one down as Combe punished a mistake in the middle.

The visitors had a chance to equalise just before half time, but Matt Scott's lob went over the bar.

Burnham’s hopes of getting back into the game faded after just 20 seconds of the second half after another mistake, this time down the right, which again was punished by the hosts.

The away side had a couple of half-chances to get back into the game but Combe held on for a deserved victory.

United remain in the promotion frame, but are now four points off leaders Portishead Town Reserves, with second-placed Worle and Somerton Town in third both having games in hand.

BURNHAM Reserves gained their second successive away victory with a 1-0 win at Chew Magna.

On a difficult pitch, and with the wind in the home team's favour in the first half, Burnham came under a lot of early pressure and had to thank the impressive Ashley Harrison, who made three great saves.

As the half wore on, Burnham began to dominate play and create some chances of their own, notably a 30-yard drive from the hard working Dax Vincent which the keeper just tipped over.

In the second half the heavy pitch turned the game into a midfield battle, but the Reserves' superior fitness began to tell, and the breakthrough came on the hour from Warren Whitfield, who slotted home from 15 yards after a quick passing move involving Jack Cherry and Russell Hicks.

The home team rallied and were guilty of missing a hatful of chances, but some resolute defending from Cain Smith, Matt Dibble, Jordan Costello and Daniel Giblett endured another clean sheet.
