Winscombe 3, Burnham United 2

A LATE fightback from Burnham United was not able to prevent them losing 3-2 away to Winscombe on Saturday.

On a heavy pitch after the recent weather, the visitors started brightly and playing some good football, but after 15 minutes Winscombe took the lead after Will Lamb failed to deal with a long-range shot and the rebound was bundled into the net by Paul Marquiss.

Despite going a goal down Burnham had large amounts of possession, with Jordie Eldridge going close from distance and Jamie Merrick being denied by a smart save after a dazzling run.

In the second half, Lamb pulled off two brilliant point-blank saves in the space of five minutes to keep the score at 1-0, but on the hour mark he was unable to gather a cross into the box and Winscombe striker Daniel Dancer followed up to make it 2-0.

This became 3-0 on 63 minutes after a flowing move from the home side was finished by Alex Crofts.

Substitutes Morgan Sealey and Jordan Costello made an impact as the visitors battled to get back into the game, and with 12 minutes to go there was hope when Eldridge jinked round his man and fired into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Matt Scott was put through only to be denied by the Winscombe keeper, and Eldridge’s follow-up went agonisingly over.

With five minutes left, Eldridge was brought down in the box, and Elliott Lamb confidently dispatched the penalty.

Despite a late free-kick going over and a scramble from a corner, Burnham couldn’t find an equaliser.

Burnham United Reserves 1, Tunley FC 3

AFTER they were unlucky to not take all three points against a strong Draycott side the previous week, Burnham Reserves were looking to carry that form into this fixture.

The match was controlled by the hosts early on, but they failed to create any clear-cut chances.

It was Tunley who pounced on a defensive mistake to slot home 25 minutes into the game.

Burnham started to lose confidence and made numerous mistakes, although they still looked threatening going forward, with Harry Wedgwood-Potts and Benny Windram on the flanks.

In spite of Burnham's dominance, 10 minutes before the break a Tunley counter-attack and a cool finish from their forward put them into a great position going into the break.

Early in the second half, Wedgwood-Potts skipped past the full-back to find Steve Eley in space in the box, and he slotted the ball coolly into the roof of the net, making it 2-1.

Midway through the second period, as Burnham were pushing for the equaliser, they were caught out with a quick ball over the top of the defence, and the Tunley striker made no mistake, giving the away team the breathing space they needed.

Burnham flooded the opposition with attacks for the last 20 minutes, but the visitors held on and got an important three points for their fight against the drop.
