Glastonbury 2, Burnham United 1

BURNHAM United's disappointing 2018 continued on Saturday, as they fell to a late Glastonbury strike.

The visitors started the game superbly, with a fantastic flowing move seeing Matt Scott put through on goal, but his shot went narrowly wide.

This was as good as it got for the away side, who squandered possession of the ball too often.

Glastonbury were extremely dangerous from set plays, causing havoc in the box from throw-ins and corners.

So it was no surprise that from their fourth corner they took the lead, when their centre-half rose highest to head home.

It could have been worse for the visitors, if it wasn’t for a string of smart saves from Will Lamb.

After another slow start to the second half, Burnham got a foothold in the game.

Ryan Stiles and Joe Selway both had chances blocked as Glastonbury defended for their lives.

Jack Cherry and Finley Wilkinson influenced the game after being introduced from the bench, and from a Wilkinson corner Selway fired over after finding space in the box.

On 70 minutes Wilkinson expertly slotted home a 25-yard free-kick, and this should have been the catalyst for Burnham to push on for a winner.

But then they sat back and sacrificed possession easily too often, which proved to be costly when on 87 minutes they gave the ball away cheaply on halfway, and Glastonbury broke forward.

After blocking the attack the ball fell to their midfielder who drove the ball into the top corner from 25 yards to condemn Burnham to another defeat.

Hutton 3, Burnham United Reserves 1

IN a competitive match-up, Hutton came out on top against a young Burnham side.

The first half shown little amount of chances for either side, until 10 minutes before the break where Russell Hicks' great header from a corner was denied by the woodwork.

United were looking to open the scoring in the second period, and started dominantly.

This was then rewarded on 55 minutes, where the pressure of the Burnham forwards Benny Windram and Harrison Givens forced the Hutton defender into a mishit clearance, which ended up into the back of his own net.

Burnham were then looking even more threatening going forward, but a counter-attack from Hutton and a handball by Daniel Giblett inside his own box led to an equaliser from the penalty spot.

This began a nervy spell for United and they were then punished when a through ball was latched onto by the hosts' striker and converted calmly.

Then with United throwing everything forward in the last minutes of the game, they were caught on the break and Hutton confirmed the three points with a third goal.

Vardon Cup semi-final
Burnham A 3, Cheddar A 1

BURNHAM'S A team moved into the final of the divisional cup with a hard-fought victory.

In the first half Shaun Lismore had two goals disallowed for offside and Harry Wedgewood-Potts' strong shot went narrowly over.

Goalkeeper James Fowler also had to make a smart save to keep the score 0-0 at half time.

In the second half Lismore opened the scoring in the first minute with a header.

Like many close cup games, the match came to life with 15 minutes remaining.

Kane Powell scored a rocket from 25 yards, but Cheddar soon got a goal back.

Wedgewood-Potts then scored the decisive goal, rounding the keeper and slotting into an empty net.

Man of the match Steve Osgood had a header cleared off the line, but the team were happy to see out the game and progress with the 3-1 win.
