West Clubs Women’s League
Sedgemoor Division 1
Burnham-on-Sea 2, Yeovil & Sherborne 2nds 4

BURNHAM could not quite hold on to what would have been a valuable point, as they slipped to a narrow defeat in their last league game of the year.

They matched Yeovil & Sherborne throughout, riding their luck at times, but doing more than enough to merit a draw.

The hosts fell behind but were soon level again, as Amy Edmundson scored with a delightful reverse stick strike from a tight angle, after fine work by Ellie Bishop and Jem Johnson.

Injuries in defence meant a reshuffle midway through the first half, but goalkeeper Nicki Glanville, and the defence in front of her, performed heroics to keep the scores level at the break.

A slight tactical tweak saw the Blues enjoy more of the ball in the second half, with Caroline Hunt and Kerry Harvey impressing, Harvey showing great skills down the right and creating opportunities as Burnham really took a hold of the game.

Again they fell behind, but again they equalised quickly, Edmundson turning provider as her shot was saved and Bishop slammed in the rebound.

At this point it could have gone either way, as both teams had their chances, but a third Yeovil goal and a fourth on the counter-attack denied the hosts.

Player of the match: Carly Bush

Burnham’s next match is a friendly against Nailsea this Saturday; the last training session of the year is the following Monday.

The Blues go into 2019 at the bottom of the Sedgemoor Division 1 table, with just one point, but there are two teams just four points ahead of them, so it remains all to play for, starting with a home match with ECVH on January 19.
