JONTE Smith said it was a tough decision for him to join up with Bermuda while trying to impress at Oxford United.

But the striker is hoping that making his mark on the international stage will work in his favour long-term.

The 24-year-old is in line to win a tenth cap for his country in Sunday’s CONCACAF Nations League qualifying game against hosts Dominican Republic.

Victory would secure their place in this summer’s Gold Cup, hosted by the United States and Costa Rica.

Smith joined United from Bostik League Premier Division side Lewes in February, agreeing a deal until the end of the season.

The striker, who made his debut as a substitute against Blackpool last month, insists it was a tough call between staying in Oxford and heading out to the Caribbean.

“To be completely honest, it hasn’t been the easiest decision,” said Smith.

“Obviously doing everything I can to get in the first team and hopefully take that chance when it comes has been a big priority.

“But it’s probably the biggest game for my country in a long time – it’s a chance to qualify for a major tournament.

“I’ve just had to make the decision to go and hopefully I can help them accomplish that mission.”
