SGB Premiership
Wolverhampton Wolves 62, Somerset Rebels 28
Points: Wolverhampton 3, Somerset 0

THE ‘Cases’ Somerset Rebels fell to their heaviest defeat of the season in the SGB Premiership match at Wolverhampton on Monday night, with the home side dominating proceedings right from the word go, writes Ian Belcher.

Somerset, who went into the match minus Charles Wright, a late withdrawal due to a sore knee suffered in his heat nine fall in Friday’s match against the same opponents at the Oaktree Arena, fell behind to a Wolverhampton 4-2 in the opening heat.

Things got no better for the Rebels from thereon in, to the extent that Wolves had the match virtually sewn up with a third of the match still remaining, as Jacob Thorssell (15 points) and Freddie Lindgren (12 points) led the way.

The only bright spots for the Rebels and their small band of travelling fans were the four heat winners they were to provide.

Paul Starke brought home two of them, but that was scant consolation as Wolverhampton dominated throughout, with Lindgren and Thorssell both unbeaten by a Somerset rider.

Somerset team manager Garry May said: “The scoreline speaks for itself and, although the boys tried their best, Wolves were far too good for us on the night.

“It was always going to be difficult to come here with a view to leaving with some league points to show for our troubles, but Wolves certainly taught us a lesson tonight.

“I really feel for those Somerset fans who made the journey up to support the team, and I am just sorry we did not put up a better performance for them at least.

“We now have 10 days before our next match, so it will give me the chance to sit down and look at things to see where we go from here in order to try and turn our season around.”
